Just listened to an incredible session (amazing energy!) with Ekta Chopra, Chief Digital Officer at E.L.F. BEAUTY on how they’re building the company of the future “at the intersection of data, AI, and humans.” Ekta shared how E.L.F. operates with a “renegade spirit” – always trying to do more with less, move fast, and stay humble and hungry. Their mantra: Everything is E.L.F.ing Possible. From a $250M brand in 2015 to over $1B in 2025, their success comes from blending data for insight, AI for power, and humans for purpose. Some fantastic insights froms Cara Loeys at Circana sharing how consumer sentiment data is shaping up for 2025. Major theme is a focus on consistent value, small luxuries and newness. Food and bev spend is up incrementally while sales are soft for general merchandise and other discretionary areas. This is driven by the widening income gap and is playing out in how, when and where we shop - “fill you basket” is down, pack sizes are up (club, eCom). Consumers are also more focused on “my needs” (benefits + premium), so what they’re pulling back from general merchandise, they are willing to shift to premium food and beverage (read: functional) products - to make up for that “out of home” experience. Along with this comes a host of other interesting shift like the rise of “niche communities,” the overall reduction of calorie consumption (also due to the rise of GLP-1), the adoption and expansion of private label and more. Next year, we should expect 3-5% growth in CPG, innovation will continue to drive premiums, and more focus on a hyper-personalized engagement and shopping experience.

Kicking off CGT - Consumer Goods Technology Tech Sales and Marketing Summit with Alan Wizemann of Southern Glazer's Wine & Spirits, talking about how distributors like SG operate effectively within the three-tier model today, at this pivotal moment in retail tech. Love learning how SG is starting with their customer (on-prem/off-prem), who understands the pos, have the data, etc. Great story about leveraging market intelligence (understand the visual reality of the shelf), point of sale data, dayparting, content syndication, generative AI selling stories and their customer network to move the needle and modernize a system that hasn’t seen a lot of advances over the last 100 or so years.
