Building a flexible combat system for Aether & Iron

Aether & Iron | Seismic Squirrel
Aether & Iron | Seismic Squirrel

Seismic Squirrel engaged Chaos Theory Games to help bring their vision for Aether & Iron to life – a narrative-driven RPG set in sky-high New York City, where players explore a fractured world and build relationships.

At the core of the game is a tactical, grid-based vehicular combat system where players control a squad of customizable vehicles in turn-based road battles. To create the feeling of a car chase, the environment needed to be constantly moving during combat, which presented the team with design challenges.

We sat down with James Lockrey, managing director at Chaos Theory Games, and Elric Milton, one of the game designers, to discuss the challenges they faced, along with the solutions they found to overcome these hurdles.

MeshLOD Guide and Deep Dive

Unity 6.2 just leveled up performance optimization

If you’ve ever wrestled with managing LODs (Level of Detail) manually, you’ll love this video: Unity’s brand-new Mesh LOD system makes it effortless to generate and manage LODs right inside the Editor, no extra objects, no duplicate meshes, and a minimal memory footprint.

In this hands-on tutorial by SpeedTutor, you’ll learn how to:

  • Generate LODs directly on import
  • Improve runtime performance without extra overhead
  •  Adjust LOD behavior globally or per object
  • Smooth transitions with crossfade support
  • Troubleshoot common pitfalls and limitations
  • Even export LOD meshes for use in other 3D tools

This feature is especially powerful for high-density assets like rocks, vehicles, creatures, and props. Giving you better performance without compromising on visual quality.

URP recipe: Compute shaders

ICYMI: URP recipe: Compute shaders

This tutorial is based on a Universal Render Pipeline (URP) recipe from the "Create popular shaders and visual effects with Universal Render Pipeline (Unity 6 edition)" technical e-book.

By the end of this tutorial, you’ll have written your own compute shader that will create particle effects. This tutorial is aimed at intermediate Unity users who have developed projects in Unity, know how to use URP features, and have some knowledge of writing HLSL-based shaders.

Make a mixed reality multiplayer app - Part 1

Unity’s Mixed Reality multiplayer tabletop template serves as a starting point for mixed reality development by leveraging XR Interaction Toolkit, Netcode for GameObjects, Unity Services, and AR Foundation.

In this video, look at the template’s project set up and components, which we’ll reuse to build our own MR multiplayer 3D model visualizer.

Make a mixed reality multiplayer app - Part 2

In this video, we reuse the MR multiplayer tabletop template to build our own MR multiplayer 3D model visualizer.

Building on the existing game modes, we create a new visualizer that will allow us to share, discuss, and transform a 3D model in real time.

Getting started with the Project Auditor

In this video, we show you how to get started with the Project Auditor. This suite of static analysis toolsscans your entire project and provides detailed reports about inefficiencies, like heavy scripting calls, unused assets, excessive entity counts, etc., which you can then address.

Video tutorial: AI Navigation 2.0 - Simulate flying NPCs

In this video, we demonstrate one way to implement flying creatures that chase the player while navigating around obstacles. You’ll learn how to use different NavMesh Agent Types to define custom movement rules for various NPCs, and how to combine them with NavMesh Links to enable more dynamic pathfinding behavior.
