Music doesn't resume after watching a short video on other apps

Hi, I recently installed Spotify on my Android device and noticed that the app does not auto-resume playback after interruptions.

 

Interruptions that cause this:

• Notifications

• Brief Bluetooth disconnects

• Short network drops

• Switching between apps

 

After any of these, music pauses and does not start playing again automatically, even though other apps auto-resume normally.

 

Details:

• Android device

• Latest Spotify version

• Battery optimization disabled for Spotify

• Background activity allowed

• Issue persists after clearing cache and reinstalling

 

Since this happens on a fresh install, I’m wondering if this is a known issue in the current Android build.

Could the team please confirm if this is being investigated or if a fix is planned?

Thanks for reaching out via the Community! We hope you don't mind that we moved your thread to the Android section of the Help board as it better fits here, and the one you had originally posted in was about iOS devices.

 

To get a better understanding of the situation, we'd like to gather some additional details. Let us know:

  • Did you notice when this behavior occurred for the first time (was it after something specific such as a software update for example)?
  • Is it a specific app's notifications that are causing the interruption?
  • Only a specific Bluetooth device?
  • The exact Android-version you're running on your device.

Lately we can't say that we've noticed similar issues in the forum and it's great that you've already performed some troubleshooting steps. 

 

Something worth mentioning is that in general, the Android OS ensures there's only one app playing sound through an audio stream at a time via something called audio focus, so perhaps there is another app that invokes priority when you receive a notification, which causes it to pause the playback. Let us know if perhaps there's another app you've installed which may be interfering.

Hi, thanks for the quick response.

 

Here are the details you asked for:

 

• Device: Google Pixel 2 XL

• Android version: Android 11

• This behavior has been happening since I first installed Spotify, so there wasn’t a software update that triggered it.

• Autoplay does resume after phone calls, but it does not resume after YouTube Shorts, other notifications, or brief app switches.

• I’ve tested with one Bluetooth device, but the issue also happens without Bluetooth, so it doesn’t seem related to the device.

• I don’t have any apps installed that are intentionally set to take audio priority, and other media apps I use don’t have this problem.

 

It feels like Spotify is losing audio focus and not regaining it in these cases, even though the interruption is very short. Let me know if you need any logs or further info.

Thanks for your reply and the detailed info you sent. 

 

Could you make sure that Spotify has all necessary permissions enabled in your mobile device?

 

  1. Open your Settings menu.
  2. Scroll to the bottom to find Spotify and open the app settings.
  3. Enable everything you see.

On another note, do the notifications that cause the issue produce sound? If so, could you check if making them silent or setting the phone on vibrate/mute makes a difference?
