Option to stream in Lossless quality while keeping lower download quality

Dear Spotify team,

I really enjoy using Spotify, but I’ve run into a frustrating limitation with the quality settings.

At the moment, I can set download quality and streaming quality separately, but once a track is downloaded, Spotify will always play the downloaded version — regardless of the streaming quality I’ve selected.

This means that if I download my music in High Quality (to save storage space), I can no longer listen to that track in Lossless over Wi-Fi — even though that’s exactly what I’d like to do.

It would be a huge improvement if Spotify allowed:

  • downloads to remain at a lower quality, but
  • automatically stream the lossless version when on Wi-Fi.

This way, I could save space on my device while still enjoying the full lossless experience whenever possible.

I hope you will consider adding this feature in a future update, as it would significantly improve the listening experience.

Hi @beSKG

Thanks for your comment about the cache. This is something they all Spotify users need to be monitoring.

It is handy to know that data gets saved to the cache but be warned!!. My fave playlist downloaded uses 3.5 GB of storage for 100 tracks. My files cached in about a week came to 14.3 GB.

Bottom line. Keep a close watch on your cache and clear it often.

I hope this helps. Bye for now, and have a great day!! 😄

Agree! I just want to save space on my phone when I’m traveling. I refuse to download my entire playlist of over 2,000 songs in lossless, even though I’d love to enjoy that quality when I’m not traveling. It’s such a stupid setup right now - as long as you’re on Wi-Fi, you should be able to stream in lossless quality.

I would also like to see this as it’s very frustrating

This would be an enormous quality of life improvement. Please prioritize this Spotify!

You probably haven't updated Spotify yet, because you can now choose how it is downloaded or listened to live. When you go to the library, just choose which one you want to hear. In the Netherlands, it always works out as desired.

Dutch-Elvis, that’s not true. My app is updated but it still favors downloaded quality over streaming quality. You cannot adjust or choose this. Spotify has made no changes, so if you have downloaded your playlist is lower quality than Lossless you are still not able to play them in lossless even on wifi.

Xandercorneliys This option is not yet available in your country, so please wait a little longer. Unfortunately, updates are not available everywhere at the same time.

Dutch-Elvis I truly hope you are correct. Can you show a screenshot that shows this option or the choices you have where you can actually set it to play lossless even on downloaded content, cause I have searched online and there is NOTHING about this update 😅 Not sure I believe it till I see it

I’ve been looking for a solution to this exact problem and ended up here. Totally agree. It’s been a couple of months and surprising that it’s still not addressed. Really hope Spotify adds this soon, because it would make a big difference.
