Yesterday was a busy day across Cornwall for Minister for Industry Chris McDonald and the four Cornish Labour MPs Perran Moon MP Jayne Kirkham Anna Gelderd and Noah Law. After kicking off the day at Camborne School of Mines, University of Exeter for a round table with the Critical Minerals Association (UK) to discuss the new critical minerals strategy, they toured the Duchy, finishing up at our lithium production plant. We were delighted to show them around the plant and introduce them to head of process Ben Cordier, who explained how we produce battery-grade lithium carbonate from local, Cornish granite. Head of mining Hanno Buys talked through our lithium resource and mine design. Alan Parte and Vincent Dufief joined the day to meet the Minister discuss policies that the UK and EU can champion to build a resilient critical minerals industry. It was a truly inspiring day - huge thanks to everyone involved across Imerys British Lithium Limited in bringing it all together 👏

Our advanced pilot plant uses bespoke technologies to sustainably extract battery-grade lithium from Cornish granite
About us
Imerys British Lithium runs a £4 million lithium pilot plant in mid-Cornwall to demonstrate and optimise bespoke technology for the sustainable extraction of battery-grade lithium carbonate from mica granite. We are progressing towards full-scale lithium carbonate production by 2030. We were the first company to drill for lithium in the UK, and have built in Cornwall, the only dedicated lithium pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy laboratory in the UK. In 2021 Imerys British Lithium won a £2.9m research and development grant from Innovate UK to build our pilot plant to demonstrate our novel technology, to prove its environmental credentials and to produce samples for lithium customers. In 2022 we were awarded a £2m scale up readiness validation grant by the Automotive Transformation Fund. Imerys British Lithium is working rapidly toward establishing the UK's first quarry and refinery, to produce the lithium required for the transition of the UK from hydrocarbon to electric mobility. Imerys British Lithium aims to be the lowest-carbon producer of lithium, and with production in the UK giving our local battery makers and EV makers an advantage over Europe.

We welcome the newly launched critical minerals strategy which underscores the role Cornwall can play in unlocking growth for the UK. The resources sector support hundreds of jobs across Cornwall and projects such as ours have the potential to continue this for many years to come. We look forward to working in partnership with the Government to realise the benefits of the critical minerals strategy. #lithium #cornwall Imerys Critical Minerals Association (UK)
The UK’s new #criticalminerals strategy has been released. It sets out new targets for domestic production both from primary and secondary sources, as well as limits on foreign supply from a single nation. Jeff Townsend, co-founder of the Critical Minerals Association, said: “We welcome the Government’s renewed commitment to securing the critical minerals that underpin the UK’s Industrial Strategy and future economic resilience. This strategy marks an important and timely step forward – one that recognises that modern industries, from advanced manufacturing to defence, clean energy, and high-tech innovation, are only as strong as the minerals and materials on which they depend. We recognise the growth and investment opportunities that this strategy will unlock, not only for Britain’s critical minerals companies but also for the hundreds of thousands of jobs and sectors that rely on them. If fully supported and delivered with intent, this strategy can secure the UK’s position as a trusted global partner and a leader in the technologies that will define the coming decades. The Critical Minerals Association stands ready to support its implementation and help ensure its success.”

Earlier this month, we hosted various visits to Imerys British Lithium Limited pilot plant, Gunheath Discovery Centre - which overlooks our lithium resource, and Imerys Littlejohns kaolin pit - which is very close by! A group from Falmouth Civic Society visited our lithium processing pilot plant, warmly welcomed by head of process Ben Cordier and helped by Gemma Pateman and Dan Cocker. The group had a presentation explaining how we will produce battery-grade #lithium carbonate from local, #Cornish #granite. After a hot drink and a biscuit, the Society enjoyed a tour around the pilot plant before ending with a very interesting and informative Q & A which, if not halted by their group leader, could have gone well into the night! We were also visited by a group of students from the Institute of Mineral Resources Engineering at FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences, Germany. Five students, two research assistants and their professor firstly, visited Gunheath Discovery Centre to meet mine technical manager Glen Heather and GIS specialist Jack McKie, who explained the plans to mine lithium from this old kaolin pit. Peter gleeson, head of geology, also spent time with the group giving them an insight into his work. They then headed to Imerys to see Littlejohns - the largest kaolin pit in the world - and meet exploration and resource geologist Bill Cooper. Bill delivered a talk on the viewing platform about the geology of this area, specific to kaolin, and Imerys ongoing work across mid-Cornwall. Thanks to our visitors for their interest and thanks to everyone involved in the tours 👏

Last week, our project director Edwin Berends 'dropped in' to local indoor skatepark TR7, based in Roche to meet the team and announce the launch of our support for this awesome CIC. We have donated £5,000 to enable 22 young people from the clay villages to get the chance to benefit from a mentorship programme including: - A pack of five one-to-one skateboarding lessons with a TR7 coach and upon completion, a TR7 stamp card – valued at £50 – offering free access to five open skate sessions for further independent practice - A complete equipment kit provided by Enuff Skateboards and Rekd Protection, including; a skateboard, helmet, and pads The initiative is designed to remove financial barriers and support young people in building skills, confidence, and positive routines through skateboarding in a safe, welcoming space. We will work with the team at TR7 and local schools to fill the places. MARTINA B. Biquard, co-founder of TR7 Skatepark, said: “This funding will have a real and lasting impact. Many young people in this area face barriers to accessing activities like skateboarding. By removing the cost of coaching, equipment and access, we can offer a pathway to improved confidence, routine, and mental wellbeing. “We’re incredibly grateful to Imerys British Lithium Limited for recognising the value of this work and helping us remove the barriers that many local families face.” Edwin explained more: “The team at TR7 does an incredible job of coaching and developing young people, so we wanted to support this work and enable the team to reach out to more local kids who would not otherwise be able to benefit. “We hope we can continue this work every year, and then have a real impact on the local area. We plan to offer some extra help in the way of visits to our lithium plant and mine site, maybe even work experience and career guidance for the group.” Any local groups interested in collaborating with us, or educators wishing to nominate students, please contact Jane Devereux 🛹 Imerys #communitysupport #lithium #cornwall

Back in the spring, we had the pleasure of hosting @Samantha Fenwick and her producer Lexy - from BBC World Service Business Daily - as they produced a three-part piece about the global race for #criticalminerals. We toured our pilot-scale #lithium processing plant with head of process Ben Cordier, and then Hanno Buys, our head of mining, drove us around the old #kaolin pit in which our #lithium resource is located. Alan Parte, Imerys VP for lithium projects then went on to talk about lithium production across Europe, including our French project 'EMILI' Combined, our projects will produce around 50,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent every year, for over 30 years! That's a significant proportion of Europe's projected lithium needs. By following strict IRMA Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance standards, we can ensure that our lithium is extracted and produced with minimum impact on the environment, and maximum benefit to the local community in terms of jobs and investment.
