Debian Bullseye. XFCE version 4.16. LibreOffice version 7.0.4.2

I have a file, foo.xml. I have a LibreOffice Writer document that contains a hyperlink to the said foo.xml file. When I ctrl-click on the link, I want foo.xml to be opened using Mousepad. However, it always opens with LibreOffice Writer.

It is interesting to note that, if I navigate to said foo.xml file's parent directory using Thunar, clicking on same will open said file using Mousepad.

I've tried xdg-mime default mousepad.desktop text/xml and gio mime text/xml mousepad.desktop with no joy.

How can I force LibreOffice Writer to open hyperlinks to simple .xml files using Mousepad?

  • What application is set as the default for opening xml files in Thunar? Mine is set to Geany, and LO Writer opens links to xml files in Geany. Commented Dec 9 at 2:48
  • Thanks for looking at this... Mousepad is set as the default for opening xml files in Thunar and LO Writer opens links to xml files in LO Writer... Commented Dec 9 at 3:49
  • Just to make sure... If you go into Thunar and right-click on an xml file, the top item in the popup menu says 'Open with "Mousepad"', right? If not, Thunar is probably opening xml files in Mousepad because it just takes them to be text files and Mousepad is the default text file reader. Commented 2 days ago
  • It would help if you mention some of the things you've tried. All we know is that you made some unspecified attempts using xdg-mime and gio and spent time asking some LLM. What approaches did you try that failed? How can we know we aren't telling you to try the same things again? Commented yesterday
