Congratulations to the inaugural Transportation Systems Division Executive Committee—an outstanding global team whose expertise will drive the division forward!

A simulation tool at UC San Diego is changing how researchers evaluate tall cold-formed steel buildings during earthquakes. Supported by NSF funding, UCSD upgraded its shake table in 2022 to move in six degrees of freedom, enabling engineers to replicate real seismic forces. With this capability, the team introduced the concept of a “service level earthquake” (SLE), a design target that ensures buildings remain safe and functional after a quake—shifting the focus from simply preventing collapse to improving resilience and recovery. This summer, researchers tested a 100-ft, 10-story steel building on the shake table, including simulations of the 1994 Northridge and 1989 Loma Prieta earthquakes. The results are now being analyzed to help inform future building codes and advance earthquake-ready design. Video: Robert Buckley/University of California San Diego
