Last week, WTS-NE wrapped up two events which were all about fun, learning and networking. On Friday, November 14th, we hosted Ben Fischer, PE and Maddie McArthur, EI from Felsburg Holt & Ullevig for a coffee chat on 'Transportation Resilience' which was well-attended and challenged common interpretations of resilient design by reframing resilience as a guiding principle rooted in risk management, systems thinking, and interdisciplinary practice rather than the common approach of treating resilience as an overly complex separate design objective. On Saturday, November 15th, Jessica Jurzenski hosted a friendsgiving lunch which lined up really well with the beautiful weather here - 🍂☀️ Grateful hearts, full plates, and sunshine overhead!! Events like these remind me that connection fuels collaboration. Whether it’s around a conference table or a picnic bench, gratitude and good company go a long way! 🥂

We’re proud to see Rachel Ackermann, PE, ENV SP representing FHU at this week’s Transportation Research Board (TRB) webinar, “Simulation as an Art: Predicting the Future with Operational Traffic Models.” She’ll share insights from FHU’s I-270 EIS modeling, featured as a case study in NCHRP Synthesis Report 650. Don’t miss the discussion – register today! https://lnkd.in/gqgwHn77
Don’t miss the Transportation Research Board (TRB) webinar this Thursday – link to register is below. I’m excited to present the session “Simulation as an Art: Predicting the Future with Operational Traffic Models.” This is based on NCHRP Synthesis Report 650: Practices for Operational Traffic Simulation Models. I’ll be sharing insights from the I-270 Environmental Impact Statement, where our team at Felsburg Holt & Ullevig worked with CDOT and FHWA to apply the latest FHWA Traffic Analysis Toolbox calibration framework in a live NEPA project. Join me and fellow practitioners and researchers to discuss how simulation tools are being used to inform decision-making and improve transportation system performance. Learn more and register here: https://lnkd.in/g33u9fYT Looking forward to joining the conversation and sharing lessons learned!

FHU’s Ben Fischer, PE and Maddie McArthur, EI joined Dr. Eric Hunt at the ACEC Nebraska Conference to present “Transportation Resilience: Reducing Risk from Natural Hazards.” The session highlighted how Nebraska’s evolving climate is already impacting infrastructure — and why now is the time to lead with resilience in every design decision. Eric shared key data on regional climate trends, setting the stage for Ben and Maddie to explore how integrating resilience principles can reduce risk, minimize long-term costs, and strengthen communities across the state. Their message was clear: resilience isn’t a buzzword, it’s smart engineering. By designing with resilience in mind, we can create infrastructure that protects investments, reduces disruptions, and adapts to a changing environment. #ACECNebraska #ResilientByDesign #TransportationPlanning #InfrastructureResilience #FHU #EngineeringExcellence

Congratulations to Michelle Stevens PE, MBA, Principal at FHU, on receiving the 2025 APWA Colorado William E. Korbitz Award! This award is one of APWA Colorado’s highest honors, recognizing individuals whose career accomplishments, leadership, and integrity reflect the legacy of William E. Korbitz, the Chapter’s first president. Michelle’s three decades of experience span multimodal corridors, major roadway and interchange projects across Colorado, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Florida. Over her 15+ years at FHU, she has been a trailblazer—advancing innovative interchanges such as diverging diamonds, split diamonds, and single point urban designs, leading NEPA and PEL studies for arterial multimodal corridors, developing various roundabout configurations and expanding roundabout expertise as a mainstream practice. Today, she’s guiding FHU Risk Management practice, while still leading some of our most complex projects. We are proud to celebrate Michelle’s outstanding leadership, technical excellence, and dedication to the profession. Please join us in congratulating her on this well-deserved recognition! #EngineeringExcellence #APWA

FHU was proud to partner with Nebraska Department of Transportation and Platte County on the East 29th Avenue Viaduct Project, a new grade-separated crossing over the Union Pacific Railroad that will reduce collisions and congestion in this vital industrial area. FHU led traffic analysis, alternative evaluation, design, and environmental reviews that shaped the project’s direction and ensured a balanced solution for all users. Working alongside Kirkham Michael — whose bridge design and surveying expertise were integral to the project’s success — the team demonstrated the power of collaboration and innovation. Congratulations to everyone involved in bringing this important connection to life! #ConnectingCommunities #TransportationExcellence #NDOT #FHUProjects
Today, community and state leaders gathered in Columbus to celebrate a project decades in the making - the East 29th Avenue Viaduct. The goal of the viaduct is to improve safety and traffic flow in a busy manufacturing area. Thank you to all in Platte County, and everyone who worked on this important project. A special thanks to Valmont Industries and the Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce for helping host such a great event. For more photos visit https://lnkd.in/gaH6PT99
