Yesterday, AARP Foundation’s William Rivera provided expert testimony to the House Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor & Pensions to help ensure that older workers can protect their retirement benefits through meaningful access to the courts. He shared that "Access to legal remedies is not the enemy of retirement security—it is its safeguard. When participants are denied access to the courts, fiduciary misconduct goes unchecked.” ➡️ Watch his full remarks beginning at 20:00: http://spr.ly/604972lu9

I first came to DC in 1990 as a summer intern on Capitol Hill between my junior and senior years of college. 35 years later, I made my debut as a Congressional witness. I enjoyed having the opportunity to testify on behalf of AARP this morning before the House Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor & Pensions. We need to ensure that workers have meaningful access to the courts to protect their retirement benefits, as the U.S. Supreme Court held unanimously in Cunningham v. Cornell earlier this year. Fiduciaries must act prudently and loyally, and beneficiaries must have a fair chance to safeguard the savings they have earned over a lifetime. AARP and AARP Foundation will continue fighting to protect your retirement. https://lnkd.in/eGMe5u9J

On this Giving Tuesday, I'm reflecting on volunteerism as one of the most underestimated forms of community infrastructure. The most durable community outcomes don't happen through statements or campaigns. They happen because people choose to show up consistently and do the work that holds others steady. In AARP Foundation's Tax-Aide and Experience Corps programs, I see this every day. Volunteers are not "helpers"; they are critical partners who drive financial stability for older adults and strengthen academic confidence for students. Their contribution is material, measurable and indispensable. Today is a reminder that generosity is multidimensional. Money matters, but so do presence, accountability, and follow-through. Those forms of giving often yield the deepest impact. To every volunteer who operates with that level of commitment: thank you! Your discipline and service create outcomes that last. And if you are looking for a meaningful way to contribute this season, consider giving your time. When applied with purpose, it remains one of the most powerful levers for change. #GivingTuesday #Volunteerism #Leadership #AARPFoundation

Thanks to NMSDC for elevating how AI is reshaping work, including what that means for older and low-income workers. Our panel dug into the essential question: how can we ensure that everyone can adapt and benefit from this rapid transition? Meeting this moment will require all of us—public, private, philanthropic and nonprofit leaders—working together so that every worker is equipped to succeed.
Grateful to have joined some incredible leaders at NMSDC's conference in Miami this month for an important conversation: AI and the Future of Work: Building Prosperity That Works For Everyone. As we discussed on stage, artificial intelligence is already reshaping enterprise software, capital markets, and workforce dynamics at unprecedented speed. The opportunities are significant, but so are the challenges we need to address. The path forward requires us to ask critical questions: How do we maximize AI's potential to create new opportunities and drive growth? How do we help workers adapt and develop the skills needed for emerging roles? How do we ensure businesses can innovate while building workforce capabilities for tomorrow's economy? Thank you Burhan Sebin and Sohaib Shaikh for the engaging dialogue. Special shoutout to Claire Casey and the AARP Foundation for their partnership on these matters. Our conversation together has reinforced an important truth: When we invest in workforce development and embrace innovation, we build more competitive businesses, stronger communities, and long-term economic growth. To Donald Cravins, Jr., Esq., Lisa Whaley Morris, and the entire NMSDC community: thank you for creating the space for these conversations. The future of work is being written now! #FutureOfWork #AI #NMSDCConference #TheExchange #WorkforceDevelopment

A new report from the National Council on Aging and the LeadingAge LTSS Center @UMass Boston offers new insight into the millions of older adults in the U.S. who remain financially insecure. The reports notes: "80%, or about 34 million households, are unable to weather a major shock such as widowhood, serious illness, or the need for long-term care." AARP Foundation continues to drive meaningful, long-term change to address these stark economic realities by fostering connections, empowering people to act and transforming lives. ➡️ Read the full report: http://spr.ly/60477Wj1x

Wheelchair users and older adults with disabilities deserve to live where they choose. That driving principle has now culminated in a landmark settlement agreement that ends longstanding discriminatory practices in New York assisted living facilities. “Adult care facilities exist to support people who need help with daily life—not to shut their doors on those who need it most. This outcome sends a clear message that discrimination against people with disabilities will not be tolerated," says AARP Foundation's William Rivera. The case builds on our broader litigation strategy to ensure that older adults with disabilities can age with dignity and autonomy — whether in their homes or in community-based care settings. ➡️ Special thanks to Fair Housing Justice Center, New York State Department of Health, Mobilization for Justice, and Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP. 🔗 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/ejiWYA87

Older adults consistently have the lowest enrollment rates for #SNAP, with just 34% of eligible adults over age 60 participating in the program in FY2022. Given this enrollment issue, the Elderly Simplified Application Project (#ESAP) is a demonstration project that states and territories may pursue to make SNAP more accessible to eligible older adults and/or people with disabilities with no earned income. With our grant support, APHSA -- American Public Human Services Association conducted a survey of state SNAP agencies and community organizations that assist older adults to understand the biggest challenges and opportunities with ESAP implementation. Read the full report to see what we learned.
