About us

One Architecture, founded in Amsterdam in 1995, is an award-winning firm that designs buildings, infrastructures and urban environments. ONE works around the globe, using design to help cities, regions and countries with their long-term spatial and infrastructure planning. Our New York office, One Architecture & Urbanism (ONE), was established in 2015 to focus on planning and resilient design. ONE is interested in process as much as in projects. Over the years, this interest has resulted in an open, collaborative, practice in which issues such as finance, organization, technology, culture and policy/politics form an active part of any work we do.

  • Congratulations to our friends and collaborators at Stoss Landscape Urbanism, whose phenomenal work on Moakley Park was recognized by the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction as this year’s Grand Prize Winner for the North America region! One Architecture & Urbanism (ONE) is proud to have been the resilience planner and the advisor on architecture in the early stages of the project, which “transforms one of Boston’s largest waterfront green spaces in Boston into a resilient, inclusive, and multifunctional public landscape.” From its resilience-forward approach to spurring investment in surrounding communities, Moakley Park “sets a global benchmark for resilient coastal urban planning, enriching local communities while providing a scalable model of environmental and social sustainability.” The jury lauded the project’s “intelligent integration of landscape architecture and stormwater management, specifically praising the living shoreline and adaptive berm strategies as exemplary approaches to urban flood defense.” ONE worked with Stoss to develop a the “thoughtful design [that] visibly educates residents on climate adaptation, shifting away from traditional, heavily engineered solutions toward more ecological and performative landscapes.” Matthijs Bouw was honored and humbled to represent ONE at the ceremony on Thursday, joining chris reed, Marin Braco, PLA, ASLA, and Judy Nitsch on stage, and congrats to the whole team (James Lima Planning + Development, Nitsch Engineering, Weston & Sampson)! Sea2City: Reimagining Reconciliation in Design and Policy | Analysis and Planning by Mithun + One Architecture & Urbanism (ONE), and PWL Partnership Landscape Architects Inc. Grounded in the City of Vancouver’s commitment to truth and reconciliation, this nature-based climate adaptation initiative reimagines the historic False Creek shoreline in collaboration with the xwməθkwəy’əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. Through co-creation and shared learning, Sea2City envisions a resilient future where Indigenous knowledge, ecological restoration, and urban adaptation come together to guide the city’s Coastal Adaptation Plan. “A very collaborative project with a refreshing approach, combining sound planning principles... working together with host nations to arrive at mutually beneficial long-term green solutions.” —2025 Awards Jury Explore the full project: https://lnkd.in/gqcpe-Ae Image credit: ASLA 2025 Professional Analysis and Planning Honor Award. • What an honor! Our project “Ground for Wellbeing” has been nominated for Het Zonnetje 2025, an award from the Nationaal Deltaprogramma celebrating initiatives that contribute to a future in which we live smartly and sustainably with water. “Ground for Wellbeing” focuses on climate adaptation to the extremely high groundwater levels and ongoing land subsidence that threaten the livability of Amsterdam’s Tuindorp Oostzaan district. The winner will be announced at the National Delta Congress on November 13. We hope you agree that “Ground for Wellbeing” deserves Het Zonnetje 2025! Cast your vote either at the congress itself or via the livestream if you’re watching online. With your vote, you help us build a livable, climate-adaptive future in our existing cities, where we see water not as an enemy, but as a partner. 👀 Watch our nomination video: https://bit.ly/z25-bvdb 💡 Learn more about the project: https://lnkd.in/esHfadiS 🗓️ Register for the livestream on Nov. 13: https://bit.ly/nd25-reg Together, we’re shaping a water-wise, climate-resilient future!

  • Last week, we shared the ins and outs of East Side Coastal Resiliency (ESCR) with this year's Urban Fellows cohort from the Penn Institute for Urban Research. Led by Global Director of Programs Amanda Lloyd, the fellows took the ferry to Corlears Hook at the recently reopened section of East River Park, where they heard from ONE’s Laura Frances about passive and active design features that offer residents and visitors excellent public amenities. The group toured the full extent of the newly completed portion of the upgraded park, walking along the waterfront from the amphitheater to the popular tennis courts just north of the Williamsburg Bridge. ESCR being the first major resilience project of its kind in NYC, Laura also compared the park design to her past work on Domino Park just across the East River. We look forward to hosting next year's cohort at the next section of the park!

  • The reviews are in—East River Park is “a smashing success!” Lower East Side resident and journalist Julianne Escobedo Shepherd has been following the construction of East River Park over the last several years and is pleased to report that she and her neighbors find it as spectacular as we do. “…the vibe is pretty good” “…total game changer” “…feels like a vacation to [some] magical land that cares about human quality of life” “We've had variations of East River Park since it first opened in 1939, but something about this version feels more welcoming, one of the rare third spaces in the city where leisure costs nothing and the pluralism on which we pride ourselves bears out.” “…this is the park that I want” Escobedo Shepherd also spoke to ONE’s Matthijs Bouw about the broader East Side Coastal Resiliency (ESCR) project, which is the impetus for rebuilding a more resilient park. “The thinking, Bouw told Hell Gate, was to build the necessary floodgates while also incorporating feedback from the local community to better integrate public space—what Bouw called ‘social infrastructure.’” Read the article on Hell Gate! https://bit.ly/hg-erp #eastriverpark #eastsidecoastalresiliency #escr #resilience

  • We’re excited to share that our project Bodem voor de Buurt has been nominated for “Het Zonnetje 2025,” an award from the Dutch Nationaal Deltaprogramma, celebrating practical solutions for living with water. Bodem voor de Buurt aims to find a solution for the extremely high groundwater levels and land subsidence that pose a threat to Amsterdam district Tuindorp Oostzaan. Bodem voor de Buurt is truly unique as it is set up as a “zoöp”: an organizational form that gives a voice to non-human life within the decision-making process. Het Zonnetje 2025 will be awarded at the upcoming National Delta Congress. We’re honored to be among the three nominated projects contributing to a climate-resilient future. Check out the video featuring District Executive Yassmine El Ksaihi, One Architecture & Urbanism (ONE)’s Bart Aptroot, and Head of The Zoönomic Institute Klaas Kuitenbrouwer sharing the story behind the project: https://bit.ly/z25-bvdb Learn more about the project here! https://lnkd.in/esHfadiS
