How to build a healthy mindset this school year, according to a local mental health expert

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Dr. Sheldon Jacobs, board president of the local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), shared insights on maintaining a healthy mental well-being for students and families as the school year progresses.
"A healthy back-to-school mindset begins with how young people perceive themselves," said Jacobs. "Are they confident in who they are and at the center of their whole being? Social media, school, and the things they listen to may impact how they see themselves, so it's important we are also instilling messages of positivity, encouragement, and hope."
Jacobs highlighted signs that may indicate a student is struggling, such as a decline in grades or a loss of motivation to attend school. "If you have a kiddo that is goal-oriented and now they're not showing motivation to look ahead, that could be a sign of something going on," he said.

To set good mental health examples, Jacobs emphasized the importance of routines. "Routines essentially give children safety and control because they provide a roadmap on how to prepare for what lies ahead," he said, citing research that shows children who consistently participate in daily routines typically see improved academic achievement and stronger language development.
Jacobs also addressed the role of social media and cellphones in students' lives. "I'm a realist. I realize most young people have cellphones today. That's just the reality," he said. "I think how you utilize that screentime is the most important thing, so parents, I encourage you to set boundaries around cellphone use."
For families seeking additional support, Jacobs noted that professional help is available, including therapy and peer-to-peer support groups.
NAMI offers weekly gatherings and workshops, along with specific resources for children, providing a valuable community resource for those in need.
