Father and son robbed at gunpoint during Facebook Marketplace sale

Justin and Ryder Perea sharing details about their experienced being robbed at gunpoint.

Justin Perea and his 14-year-old son, Ryder, say they were victims of an armed robbery during what they thought would be a routine Facebook Marketplace transaction.

The pair had arranged to purchase an e-bike for $1,200, but were instead met with a dangerous encounter.

The seller, claiming to be too young to meet at a police station, directed them to a neighborhood off Durango and Rochelle.

Upon arrival at Rimwood Court around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, they were approached by a teenage boy named Mason, whom Justin said he had been communicating with via Facebook.

He said Mason then led them to a garage where two other teenagers emerged holding guns.

"They had hoods and then masks, so it was so fast they had the guns out," Justin recounted.

Justin said he quickly moved to protect Ryder, handed them the cash, and then walked away.

Once they returned to their car, they contacted the police, who informed them that similar incidents had occurred at the same location.

Justin and Ryder are now warning others about the scam, pointing out that the same e-bike listing remains active on Facebook Marketplace.

"Don't message that ad, don't text them, just leave it be," Ryder advised.

The experience has left both father and son shaken, with Justin admitting he didn't sleep that night. They hope their story serves as a cautionary tale for others engaging in online transactions.
