Therapy dogs bring solace to Texas flood survivors and first responders
LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — As Nevada first responders continue their search for the missing after catastrophic flooding in central Texas, a pet therapy group is on a mission to provide comfort to those affected.
Angel Paws Pet Therapy, a special ministry of Champion Forest Baptist Church in Houston, is offering solace to both survivors and first responders.
Debbie Benningfield of Angel Paws Pet Therapy shared her experiences, saying, "We've done several of these disasters before but nothing like this and I'm retired law enforcement, dozens of crime scenes, but nothing like this. I mean, when you stand on the banks and you're looking down, and you realize had you been there, it would've been above your head, tree limbs floating down, and clothes, it's haunting but as a woman of faith I have to trust this is where God wants us so that's why we're doing it."
Benningfield emphasized the unplanned nature of their mission, stating, "We didn't plan this. We didn't even have a plan when we went but we just knew this is where God wanted us and we went and we didn't worry about where are we going to go because as soon as our feet hit the ground we were in demand because there's something about loving on a therapy dog or an animal."
Describing the impact of their work, Benningfield said, "Most people want you to be there and be present, so we know as soon as they start petting, we just waiting because they're going to start talking, and the first responders started talking and the stories are too graphic for me to repeat. It's heartbreaking and to see them suffering, and they told us time and time again, this is the only time I can smile when I'm petting your dog."
As of this report, Benningfield has not yet met with Nevada's Task Force 1, which has been mobilized to assist in the search for flood victims, but she plans to update if their paths cross.
