The top two leaders of Nevada's Assembly Democrats will not seek re-election next year.

Speaker Steve Yeager and Floor Majority Leader Sandra Jauregui announced their decisions through a joint statement from the Nevada Assembly Democratic Caucus.

It's a major shakeup in statehouse politics heading into an election year where all statewide offices and Assembly seats will be on the ballot.

Both Assembly members were elected in 2016. Yeager served as speaker starting in 2023, succeeding Jason Frierson, and Jauregui became floor majority leader that same year.

Yeager represents District 9, which covers a portion of southwest Las Vegas. In a statement, he said he was proud of passing legislation for public education funding, teacher pay raises, voting access, strengthening unions and protecting reproductive health care.

His tenure included several clashes with Gov. Joe Lombardo on legislation, leading to a record number of vetoes from the governor. He also presided over a special session that saw up to $380 million in public money approved for the construction of a baseball stadium on the Las Vegas Strip for the Athletics.

"I am committed to continuing to contribute to this great state that has given me so much," Yeager said in his statement Monday.

Jauregui serves District 41, covering the Silverado Ranch neighborhood and a portion of Henderson. A survivor of the One October mass shooting, she has been a vocal supporter of gun control measures. She said she also cherished protecting state employees from severe wage and benefit cuts during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I remain deeply committed to Nevada's future and, though my time in the Legislature is ending, will continue to find opportunities to serve Nevadans and fight for the values we share," Jauregui said.
